On New Year’s Day, the Richmond Times-Dispatch published a column by Richard Meagher, a professor of political science at Randolph-Macon College and a regular contributor to All Opinions Are Local, calling for an end to the Southern practice of honoring the Confederate States of America. Cutting to the heart of the issue, Meagher declared, “The Confederates were the bad guys, as were their Jim Crow descendants. They lost, and the country is immeasurably better for it . . . [w]e need to stop celebrating the history of America’s worst impulses and institutions.”
Meagher is correct, and conservatives should heed his advice.
