In an interview with Independent Journal Review last week, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) refused to condemn antifa after a violent antifa demonstration in Berkeley, Calif. When pressed on the question, McAuliffe responded, “I denounce any individual who commits a crime, who commits violence on our citizens. We will get you, and we will arrest you, plain and simple. I don’t care what the group is.”
Although McAuliffe deserves praise for his commitment to prosecute violence wherever it arises in Virginia, his unwillingness to condemn left-wing violence is disconcerting. In the wake of Charlottesville, Americans were rightly outraged over the Trump administration’s sluggish response and initial refusal to call out white supremacists specifically. Antifa deserves no less outrage — a point even Nancy Pelosi has acknowledged.
